ABOUT OUR ASSOCIATION
Fifty years ago in 1975 a group of property owners recognised the special nature of Whangapoua so the Whangapoua Beach Ratepayers Association was created with the purpose of addressing issues of local significance.
Over time the popularity and size of our community has grown along with the variety and complexity of issues faced. In 2021, whilst retaining our founding goals, members voted to rename, and thus Whangapoua Community Association begins a new era of inclusivity and activity.
Some of the Association achievements include:
-
Building our tennis courts, helping establish the local fire brigade and securing the boat ramp renewal
-
Lobbying for purchase of reserve land at Opera Point and formalised agreement with DOC and local Iwi to protect and enhance archeological sites, native fauna and flora and public access to Opera Point
-
Organising beach sand push-ups to protect our shoreline
-
Maintaining a proactive pest control programme - including free rait bait for the Community
-
Town planning submissions to improve developments – including stopping raw sewage from being pumped into Whangapoua Harbour
-
Ongoing involvement in mitigating the effects of development at New Chums including supporting the purchase of Pukenui headland
-
Hosting community events like the Fishing Competition and Easter Egg Hunt
-
Raising funds for the Fire Brigade, Te Rerenga School, St John Ambulance, Westpac Rescue Helicopter, and more
-
Planting across Whangapoua reserves through our dedicated Reserves Group
“Preserving and Promoting the Whangapoua Experience” remains our dedicated focus.
