OPERA POINT PARTNERSHIP
At the 2021 AGM one of the projects identified as a priority by the Whangapoua community was the preservation and restoration of Opera Point as an important historical and environmental site.
The Opera Po¡nt Partnership (OPP) was formed and is a community partnership involving the Whangapoua Community Association (WCA), Department of Conservation (DOC), local lwi ( and other interested parties)
Our aim is to preserve and enhance Opera Point Historic Reserve as a safe and attractive destination for residents and visitors to explore the heritage/archaeological features, protect the conservation values and enjoy the recreational opportunities that it provides.
The preservation and enhancement of Opera Point has several objectives, including:
-
Support maintenance of the existing walking tracks to provide safe access across the summit and to the harbour beaches.
-
lncrease and protect the native bird population by a sustained predator control programme targeted at feral cats, rats, stoats, ferrets and possums.
-
Removal of any overmature pine trees that could topple causing damage to archaeological features, the tracks and the navigation channel.
-
Plan control to m¡tigate against non-native species such as the smaller wildling pines, woolly nightshade, ginger, agapanthus and blackberry.

Since 2021 we have made great progress and are delighted to have re-signed the agreement in May 2025 for a further 3 years (with a further right of renewal)
